From Primary Classrooms to Fajitas: KHS Celebrates European Languages and Culture

Celebrating European Languages at KHS

Over the past few weeks, Kilkeel High School has been marking the European Day of Languages through a wide range of activities that celebrated language learning, culture and international connections across all year groups.

The celebrations began with our Year 12 pupils visiting Kilkeel Primary School to deliver engaging French and Spanish taster lessons. We extend our thanks to KPS for their warm welcome and congratulate our Year 12 students for the enthusiasm and confidence they showed in leading the sessions. Back at KHS, pupils embraced a variety of activities. Our Year 8 book cover competition showcased some excellent creativity and artistic talent, while Year 10 Home Economics classes teamed up with the Modern Languages Department to prepare delicious fajitas, bringing a taste of international cuisine into the classroom. The celebrations also included plenty of friendly competition. Pupils tested their knowledge in our school-wide Battle of the Form Classes quiz, while Year 9 French and Spanish classes enjoyed some fiercely contested games of pétanque and bolos. Meanwhile, Year 10 pupils continued to build international friendships through their French pen pal exchange, learning more about life and culture beyond Northern Ireland.

It has been a fantastic few weeks, highlighting the importance of languages, cultural awareness and global connections, while providing pupils with exciting opportunities to learn beyond the traditional classroom setting.
