Computer Studies

OVERVIEW

Computer Science at KHS aims to develop independent learners who can think logically and solve problems using technology. Independent learning is at the heart of our course. All courses are designed around activities that the pupils themselves have to do either individually or in small groups. Throughout their studies, students will be exploring topics such as computer hardware and software, CPUs, networking, spreadsheets, databases, cyber security, as well as engaging in debates about ethical and legal issues surrounding our ever-expanding use of technology.

At KHS, we instil an appreciation of independent learning. Throughout these courses, students are encouraged to work independently, or in groups, to develop answers to questions or solutions to tasks presented to them.

AIMS

The course intends to:

  • Develop understanding of current and emerging technologies.
  • Develop understanding of the legal, social, economic, ethical and environmental impact of digital technology.
  • Help students recognise potential risks when using digital technology.
  • Develop save, secure and responsible practice.
  • Gain familiarity with real-world practices around creating digital applications and managing IT project.

KEY STAGE 3

YEAR 8

Students start by establishing a solid base in e-safety and cyber-security practice, followed by acquiring valuable skills in Office applications. This includes practical projects such as creating spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations. They are also introduced to Scratch and Microbit programming.

YEAR 9

Students explore more advanced e-safety and cyber-security topics. They then dive deeper into Microbit programming, before moving on to Python programming using Turtle Graphics. They are also introduced to the basics of computer hardware, software and operating systems.

YEAR 10

Students improve their programming skills, which allows them to complete various coding projects. They are also introduced to the function of CPUs as well as networking, which serve as a gentle introduction into GCSE topics. This allows students to ‘sample’ the GCSE content, to help them make an informed decision on whether to choose Digital Technology as one of their GCSE subjects.
