On Wednesday 19th March, KHS 1STX1 boys played in the final of the Burney Plate.
The Kilkeel team started the game on the front foot and the early chances fell to the Mourne boys. Against the run of play Grosvenor converted a short corner on the count of quarter time taking the lead. Whilst Kilkeel defended solidly Grosvenor gained the upper hand and scored from open play and added a third from a short corner shortly after. The final quarter made for a scintillating watch with the KHS boys running repeated attacks on the Grosvenor defence, and the only thing that was lacking was a goal. Despite a great team effort and dedicated performance up to the final whistle the team had to settle for Silver. The medal crowns the end of a fabulous hockey season for the team, starting with the unforgettable Hockey Tour to South Africa and ending with two hockey finals in the Burney Plate and Taylor Cup. A season that will remain in the memory of all involved, particularly so for the 11 Upper Sixth boys and the Year 12 players who have contributed so much to hockey in Kilkeel High School over the past 5 or 7 years.
