AS/A2

‘A’ Mathematics seeks to consolidate and extend the knowledge, skills and understanding developed in Key Stage 4. It provides a suitable foundation for study in Mathematics in further and higher education and for a range of interesting careers. The specification is structured in a modular format. Three modules are required for an AS grade and a further three modules are required for an A2 grade. An A* grade is awarded at the end of the 2 year course if an average of 90 uniform marks or above is achieved in modules C3 and C4. Students who have studied GCSE Mathematics at Foundation level should not attempt this subject.

Candidates are required to study SIX modules for the full Advanced GCE in Mathematics. THREE modules will be taken at the end of the L6 Year: C1, C2 and M1. The other THREE modules: C3, C4 and S1 will be taken during the U6 Year. An ‘AS’ in Mathematics can be awarded at the end of L6 for those not continuing to do the full ‘A’ level.

Each module examination will consist of a 1½ hour paper (all of equal weighting). The best result in each unit must count towards the final award and modules may be re-taken, if necessary.

An ‘A’ level in Mathematics is essential for careers in Maths, Physics or Engineering. It is very useful for careers in Architecture, Design and Technology, Accountancy, Business, Economics, Finance or Information Technology. It can also be used, together with other sciences, when considering a biological or medical career.
