Key Stage 3

Within Key Stage 3 there are three areas of study. These include:-

- Family Life

- Diet and Health

- Choice and Management of Resources

At Kilkeel High School each pupil progresses through the Key Stage 3 curriculum from year 8 to 10 covering a range of contemporary topics e.g. healthy eating, money management, product development, advertising and marketing and roles and responsibilities within families.  Each unit is designed to use a range of activities which are challenging, motivating and provide opportunities for practising skills which will be of benefit both now and in the future. 

Practical activities are greatly enjoyed by all pupils in Key Stage 3. Teaching and learning is nutrition based and practical activities are focused on healthy eating guidelines, emphasising a sound understanding of nutritional guidelines.  Pupils are encouraged to plan and prepare their own choice of practical activities as they progress through each key stage to encourage autonomy and self-belief.

Year 8 cover the following material in theory classes:

- Hygiene

- Safety

- Use of equipment

- The family

- Balanced Diet & Fibre

- Breakfast, Snacks & Packed Lunches

Practical activities include:                                                                                 

Milkshakes / smoothies / Hot chocolate / Banana bites / Wheaten Scones / Apple Twists/ Plain Cakes/ Tartlets/ Bap Pizza/ Pizza from Scratch / Chocolate fairy cakes / Wedges & hot dogs / dropped scones / Easter Cupcakes / Chocolate Chunk Muffins / Chicken Burger / Pizza Puffs

Year 9 cover the following material in theory classes:

- Fruit and vegetables

- Vegetarian diet

- Consumerism

- Cereal Products / Labelling

- Food around the World

Practical activities include:

Lentil Soup / Fruity Yoghurt Loaf / Apple crumble / Fry / Sizzling stir-fry / shortbread / Dropped Scones / Queen Cakes / Easter Cake / Scones / Cookies / Lasagne / A selection of Main dishes / A selection of Desserts

Year 10 cover the following material in theory classes:

- Healthy Living

- Budgeting - Managing Money

- Nutrition, Energy & Meal Planning

-Home & Family Life

Practical activities include:
