To fulfil our aims and objectives the department will implement the Northern Ireland Programme of Study at Key Stage 3. At Key Stage 4 and at ‘AS’ and ‘A2’ levels the department will follow the CCEA specifications.

Key Stage 4

At GCSE level we follow the CCEA syllabus. This is divided into two units (each worth 37.5% of the final mark), each covering three themes.

Unit 1- Understanding Our Natural World

Theme A – The Dynamic landscape

Theme B - Our Changing Weather and Climate

Theme C – The Restless Earth

Unit 2 - Living in Our World

Theme A – People and Where They Live

Theme B - Contrasts in World Development

Theme C - Managing Our Resources

In addition students complete one piece of fieldwork-based Controlled Assessment, worht 25% of the final mark.

Sixth Form Studies

At ‘AS’ and ‘A2’ level the students follow the CCEA specifications.

At ‘AS’ level two modules are studied:-

Module AS 1

(i) Fieldwork - Students carryout one fieldwork exercise.  They then write a 100 word summary and create a data table which is taken into the exam and is the basis for the exam questions. 

(ii) Physical Processes and Human Interaction

Module AS 2

(i) Skills and Techniques in Geography

(ii) Human Processes, Systems and Outcomes.

At A2 level two modues are studied:-

Module A2 1:

(i) Human Geography: three options – students need to study two from:


−Impact of Population Change;

−Issues in Ethnic Diversity; and

−Planning for Sustainable Settlements; and


(ii) Global Issues: the study of global debates and their context – students need

to study one from:


−The Global Warming Debate;

−The Nuclear Debate;

−The GM Crops Debate; and

−The Ecotourism Debate;


Module A2 2:

(i) Physical Geography: three options – students need to study two from:

 − Fluvial and Coastal Environments;

− Nature and Sustainability of Tropical Ecosystems; and

− The Dynamic Earth; and

(ii) Decision-Making - this takes the form of a case study where students are given an issue of Geographical significance, with a range of material and data.
